About "Gender Equity in Education"

Though the issue of gender inequality in education has improved a lot in recent years, there is still a large disparity, especially in developing countries. Each day thousands of girls face barriers to their education caused by poverty, cultural norms, practices, violence, poor infrastructure, long distances, and insecurity. It is the 21st century and educating girls should be a priority, not taboo. Investing in a girl's education can transform her life, her community, her country, and her world.

Why is it important to educate girls and women?

  1. To allow girls to live healthy and productive lives - They earn higher incomes, participate in the decisions that most affect them, and build better futures for themselves and their families.
  2. To strengthen the economy and reduce inequality - It contributes to more stable, resilient societies that give all individuals – including boys and men – the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
  3. To help girls feel safe and supported in pursuing subjects, careers, or hobbies they enjoy - This is especially true for activities in which they are under-represented.

How can we achieve social justice in education?

We must first understand the path to social justice. Justice is an ideal where all the systemic barriers are removed. However, in order to get to that point, we must first establish equity. Why, you may ask? Well, since people come from many different backgrounds around the world, we should strive for equity because equality works better when everyone starts from the same place and needs the same help. That is why equity would make more sense in terms of education, it would give every child a chance to succeed.
